In a career spanning more than three decades, Piet Schreuders has juggled graphic design, historical research, photography and writing in a unique mix of activities. His book publications include a history of vintage paperback covers, a guide to Beatles locations in London and an illustrated biography of the American illustrator James Avati. In his pamphlet “Lay In – Lay Out” he took a stand against imitative modernist typography. He publishes a highly irregular magazine about cats (De Poezenkrant) and is art director of the weekly media magazine VPRO Gids.

Making Furore: Adventures in Zine-land

In the early 1970s, to amuse himself and his friends, Dutch graphic designer Piet Schreuders began publishing small newsletters or ‘zines’. Some of these, such as FURORE and De Poezenkrant, grew into actual periodicals that still exist today; others were deliberately kept obscure or even completely secret (The Explorer, Brooklyn Berichten, MacTimes, Beau Hunks Gazette, De Wolkenkrabber and many others). These magazines reflect Piet’s passion, obsessions, hobbies and professional interests. This highly personal talk includes rare film clips, old negatives and never before shown unique specimens from Schreuders’ archive plus a glimpse of current projects and future publications.
